When importing a private key into the TronLink extension, make sure it matches your original backup. An incorrect private key may fail to import or may import an account different from your original wallet.
A successful import does not mean that you have recovered your original wallet. After importing, always check that the account address exactly matches your original wallet address.
1. Check the Private Key Format and Length
A standard private key consists of 64 hexadecimal characters: 0–9 and a–f. Uppercase letters A–F are also accepted.
Before entering a private key, check that:
- You have copied the entire private key.
- There are no extra spaces, line breaks, or other characters.
- The private key matches your original backup.
If your private key has more than 64 characters, check the original backup again. Do not select only part of the key to import.
2. How to Handle a Private Key Shorter Than 64 Characters
A private key with fewer than 64 characters cannot necessarily be recovered by adding zeros. First, check its source and your original backup.
If you have confirmed that only leading zeros were omitted, add zeros to the left until the key contains 64 characters. Keep all existing characters, whether the original number of characters is even or odd.
The examples below demonstrate formatting only. Do not use them as actual wallet private keys.
Example 1: An Even Number of Characters
For 1234, add zeros to the left until the key contains 64 characters:
0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001234
Example 2: An Odd Number of Characters
For 1234567, keep all characters and add zeros to the left until the key contains 64 characters:
0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001234567
Adding zeros cannot restore characters missing from the middle or end of a private key. If you cannot determine why your private key is shorter than 64 characters, keep your original backup and contact official TronLink support for assistance.
3. Private Key Issues in Older Versions
Private keys from older versions may require different compatibility handling. Adding zeros directly and removing the last character before adding zeros produce different private key values. Do not choose arbitrarily between these methods.
For example, keeping 1234567 and adding zeros produces a different private key from removing its last character, keeping 123456, and then adding zeros.
For a historical private key associated with an older version such as V3.24.0, the appropriate handling must be determined from its source, previous import records, and the original wallet address. The currently installed version, or a general distinction between versions before and after V3.24.0, is not enough to determine which method to use.
If the address obtained after importing a key padded with zeros does not match your original address, stop using that account. Do not remove the last character and continue experimenting. Keep your original backup and contact official TronLink support to determine whether historical compatibility handling applies.
4. Verify the Original Wallet Address After Importing
After importing, compare the TRON account address shown in TronLink, character by character, with your original wallet address from a trusted record.
- The addresses match exactly: You can confirm that you have recovered the account corresponding to your original address.
- The addresses do not match: This import has not recovered your original wallet. Stop using the account and check your backup and the handling method again.
- You have no record of the original address: You cannot yet confirm whether your original wallet has been recovered. First, look for a record of the original address or contact official support.
Do not rely only on a successful import, the account name, or the balance to determine whether recovery was successful.
When contacting official support, you may provide your original wallet address, the versions you previously used, and any error messages. Do not provide your private key, mnemonic phrase, Keystore file, or password.
